Don Tjungerai Men's Ceremony 2003
Acrylic on linen 1219 x 1524mm $7500
This painting represents a Men’s Ceremony at Karrinyarra, Mt Wedge. The men performing in the ceremony are
those of the Tjapaltjarri and Tjungerai skin groups. The men of the Jampitjinpa skin group act as the police and
look after the land for the men participating. The ceremony is in honour of the Rock Wallaby. The story is of
two Tjungerai men hunting for kangaroo but find it hard to find any or capture if seen. The men then hunt for
other sources of food. They come to a mountain and see lots of Rock wallabys and find them not so difficult to
hunt. This mountain is now the sacred site of the rock wallaby and a place where old men teach the young men
how to hunt. Don has represented the mountain as the Concentric Circle. The orange and red lines represents the
body paint design worn on the men’s faces, shoulders, upper arm, chest, back and ankles. Don has depicted the
Shields, Woomera and Spear.
