Out of the Desert commemorates June 22 1984 when the last of the "nomadic" Pintupi people walked out of the desert having had no prior contact with white people. Three of the Tjapaltjarri men soon started painting at Papunya and still do so today - Thomas, Walala & Warlimpirringa Tjapaltjarri. This exhibition is also a tribute to the late PegLeg (Mick) Tjampitjinpa who passed away in May 2006. His first contact was with Jeremy Long in 1960 and his image is immortalised in the book "The Lizard Eaters".
