Dennis Nona Muturu Goiga 2007 Etching Paper: 660mm x 540mm SOLD
A literal translation of Matura Goiga is calm time sun. In Kal Lagaw Ya, the original language of the Western
Torres Strait Islander people, Maturu means calm weather and Goiga means sun.
When a red sun is seen at sunset during periods of windy conditions it is an indication that the winds will drop
the following day and calm weather can be expected.
The cut out area in the centre of the plate represent the still leaves of the trees which hardly move at all during
this calm time period.
