Once upon a time a large crocodile lived in Mai Kusa River. This river was on the western coast of Papua New
Guinea. Ubirikubiri the crocodile saw three children playing on the river side. It pretended to be a log and swam
close to the infants. One of the children saw it and said: 'Oh, look at the big log'. They all ran and swam towards
the log and decided to go for a ride, they were all playing and jumping on it. The crocodile floated down the
river, out to the open sea. Suddenly when they got to the open sea, Ubirikubiri shook the three children off its
back and ate them all. In this print the spirits of the three children are shown riding on the crocodiles back. The
symbols separating them represent the river. At the bottom of the print Ubirikubiri is shown when small. The
head of a shark is swimming into the scene at the centre bottom of the image. The shark and the hammerheads
are attracted by the blood of the young children.
