Dennis Nona Biru Biru - Migrant Bird 2007
Etching on BFK Rives paper Paper: 700mm x 500mm SOLD
When you see brown migrant butterflies flying through the Western Torres Strait, you know it's the beginning
Nagai season. Soon after, a migrant bird from Papua New Guinea (Biru Biru), similar to the kingfisher, will fly
through on its way to Cape York. Biru Biru marks the beginning of turtle-mating season, a time when the fish
also lay their eggs which is important information for hunters. This work relates to Nagai when the shark
(Baidon) and barramundi (Wap) are laying their eggs, and the turtles are mating (Solal). Migrant butterflies and
birds, which signal the new season, are patterned in the background. At this time of year, the birds (Ganau) and
turtles are fat and good for hunting. Turtle fat is usually reserved for the high chiefs and sorcerers, but during
this time of celebration it is enjoyed by all.
