Bardi Dance Totems - Roy Wiggan's ilmas
Roy was born on Sunday Island in 1930 in north western Australia. He is a Bardi elder who represents the culture of his people through sacred dance totems known as the ilma. These ilma are rare items as Roy is the only Bardi elder who makes these ceremonial pieces after a visitation by one of his deceased ancestors who gives him the image, song and dance. The ilma are used in ceremonies to continue the culture of these Aboriginal people. The stories are told through song and dance. Each piece is fully documented on video or DVD with Roy describing the piece, telling the story, singing the song and performing the dance where appropriate.
