Iwana (Antjakitja) Ken Camping out at Ceremony Time 2007
Acrylic on Belgian linen 762 x 914mm SOLD
Iwana has depicted groups of aboriginal families, men women and children, camping together underneath the mulga
(kurku) trees as they did long ago at ceremony time when she was very young. Food and water are stored in the
forks of trees to stop them from being eaten by animals.

U shaped symbol represents the people. Carrying bowl or ‘piti’ carved from the root of the river red gum tree
(eucalyptus camaldulensis) is used to carry food gathered.

Iwana is a senior traditional elder from the Pitjantatjara/Yankunytjatjara Lands in the far north of South Australia.
Her work is inspired by the rich tradition of aboriginal culture, and connection to country.
